A Construction Worker's Daughter in San Francisco

Kimberly Guilfoyle grew up in a working-class family in San Francisco. Her father worked in construction. Her mother died of leukemia when Guilfoyle was 11, and her father raised her and her brother on his own, Business Insider reported in a 2019 profile.

She studied political science at the University of California, Davis, and graduated magna cum laude, then took a law degree at the University of San Francisco School of Law. Both degrees are listed on the biography the U.S. Embassy in Athens published when she arrived there.

Deputy District Attorney in Los Angeles

Guilfoyle started as a prosecutor. According to Business Insider, she spent four years as a deputy district attorney in Los Angeles and then four years as an assistant district attorney in San Francisco. The embassy biography dates her San Francisco appointment to 2000.

In 2001 she married Gavin Newsom. Accounts of the end of the marriage differ. Business Insider says the divorce was filed in 2005, and Fox 29 puts the divorce in 2006.

The Lineup and The Five

Television came next. From 2004 she worked as a legal analyst on cable news; Fox 29 names Court TV, ABC News and CNN. In 2006 she joined Fox News, where she hosted the weekend program The Lineup. In 2011 she became one of the co-hosts of The Five, the network's panel show. She left Fox News in July 2018, according to Business Insider.

She has one son.

Trump Victory and the 2020 Convention

After Fox, Guilfoyle moved into politics through Donald Trump's campaigns. She took a senior fundraising role in the 2020 reelection effort, and the embassy biography describes her as national chair of the Trump Victory Finance Committee. She spoke at the Republican National Conventions of 2020 and 2024. In October 2021 she took over fundraising for the super PAC Make America Great Again, Again!

During those years she was in a relationship with Donald Trump Jr. The two later became engaged, and ABC News reported that the engagement ended in late 2024.

What Her Financial Disclosure Showed

As a nominee, Guilfoyle filed a public financial disclosure in early 2025. Business Insider and the Bay Area News Group both reported on it, and the two accounts agree on its largest business holdings: a stake in Metropolitan Medspa, in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, valued at $1 million to $5 million, and a stake in a spirits branding company of the same range.

Her podcast was another income line. Business Insider put her pay from hosting The Kimberly Guilfoyle Show on Rumble at nearly $770,000; the Bay Area News Group gave nearly $800,000. Business Insider also listed consulting and fundraising clients including Right for America and Make America Great Again, Again!

Federal disclosure forms report assets in value ranges, not exact amounts, so they cannot produce a single figure. This article gives no net worth estimate. Numbers that circulate online cite no filing and are not repeated here.

Ambassador to Greece

Trump named Guilfoyle as his choice for ambassador to Greece on December 10, 2024. Her Senate hearing came in July 2025, and she was confirmed that September by a vote of 51 to 47, as part of a package of nominees. She was sworn in at the State Department on September 29, 2025, and took up the post in Athens on November 4, 2025, the first woman to hold it.

In Athens she appeared on the cover of Vogue Greece. The New York Times reported that she had said her experience of Greece before the nomination came from college history classes and a honeymoon.

The American Express Messages

On October 7, 2026, the Wall Street Journal reported that Guilfoyle had asked a Republican donor, Eric Deters, to wire about $100,000 to cover her American Express bill shortly before her Senate hearing. The New York Times later confirmed the discussions. Deters did not pay.

According to the Bay Area News Group, the messages were sent over Signal on July 3, 2025, six days before the hearing. One read: "It won't show up anywhere if you wire money to American Express." The same report said Deters had complained in June 2025 that he had already paid her $300,000 over the years. Her lawyer, Jesse Binnall, disputed that the messages were authentic.

In Greece, Foreign Minister Gerapetritis said there was no need to summon her.

October 13, 2026

Six days after the first report, the White House asked her to step down. "We have asked Ambassador Guilfoyle to resign," press secretary Katie Zacharia said on October 13, 2026. Trump said, "I didn't like what I read," ABC News and CBS News reported, and he said she had dated his son a long time ago.

Guilfoyle resigned the same day. In a post on X she called the allegations false and said she would defend her name and reputation. ABC News reported that the State Department's inspector general was looking into the matter.
