Who is Milo Yiannopoulos?

Milo Yiannopoulos, also known by his pen name Milo Andreas Wagner, is a British technology journalist who founded the UK tech blog, ‘The Kernel’ and served as senior editor of the far-right American online news media ‘Breitbart’. An expelled student from the ‘Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys’, he attended ‘Wolfson College’, Cambridge and ‘University of Manchester’, however failed to obtain any degree. He commenced on a career of technology journalism with ‘The Telegraph’ and then went on to write on the subject on the online tabloid ‘The Kernel’ that he co-founded. He then joined ‘Breitbart’. A homosexual, men’s right activist, fat-shamer, transphobe and a Gamergate figurehead, Yiannopoulos remained among the first journalists to cover the Gamergate controversy. A self-described cultural libertarian and a professional troll, he is critically outspoken on the philosophies and movements he considers left wing or authoritarian including Islam, political correctness, social justice and feminism. A controversy’s child, Yiannopoulos garnered attention for his far-right ideologies and links. He had to resign from ‘Breitbart’ following a controversy surrounding his views on a video clip that were alleged to be in support of paedophilia.

Childhood & Early Life

He was born Milo Hanrahan on October 18, 1984, in Chatham, Kent, England where he grew up. His is of mixed ancestry with a mix of Irish and Greek descent from his father’s side and a British descent from his mother.

His parents parted ways when he was around six years old. He used the word “terrifying” while describing his father.

After his mother remarried, he stayed with her and his stepfather, but did not share a cordial relation with the latter. He adopted the surname of Yiannopoulos from his paternal grandmother with whom he spent his teenage. He would often accompany her for high tea at the famous five star hotel ‘Claridge's’ in London,.

He attended ‘Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys’ in Kent, but he was expelled from the school. He dropped out from the ‘University of Manchester’ before completing his graduation.

He then started attending ‘Wolfson College’, Cambridge, where he studied English. However, here also he faced expulsion in 2010 before earning a degree.

Career

Although initially he had an interest in the field of theatre criticism, in 2009 he had an opportunity to examine the subject ‘women in computing’ for ‘The Daily Telegraph’ following which he developed an interest in technology journalism.

In 2011, he organised ‘The Telegraph Tech Start-Up 100’ that would rank prospective start-ups in Europe in the field of technology. ‘Wrong Agency’, his events company, co-founded with friend, David Rosenberg, ran the event, the fallout of which left ‘The Telegraph’ with huge loss. ‘Wrong Agency’ dissolved in May 2011.

In November 2011, he launched the online magazine ‘The Kernel’ along with Adrian McShane, ex-employee of ‘The Telegraph’; journalist Stephen Pritchard; and friends, David Haywood Smith, and David Rosenberg in order to "fix European technology journalism”, with its parent company being ‘Sentinel Media’.

‘The Kernel’ got into trouble in 2012 including being sued by two of its contributors for failing to pay thousands of pounds owed to them. It was also alleged that Yiannopoulos "screwed over" many other contributors both financially and personally and sent emails to a contributor threatening to leak embarrassing pictures and details of the latter.

In March 2013, ‘The Kernel’ closed, and its assets were acquired by ‘BERLIN42’ which launched it afresh making Yiannopoulos the editor-in-chief. It was acquired by ‘Daily Dot Media’ in 2014 with Yiannopoulos serving as an advisor.

Meanwhile, Sentinel Media Ltd dissolved in February 18, 2014 and Yiannopoulos went on to pay six contributors from his own pocket.

He featured on TV program ‘Newsnight’ in November 2013 and May 2014 debating with singer Will Young and rapper Tinchy Stryder respectively. The subjects respectively were using the word gay in playground, and music piracy and copyright infringement. He also debated with Boy George on same-sex marriage on 10 O'Clock Live.

He remained one of the early journalists who covered the Gamergate controversy. He backed Gamergate censuring what he regarded as rendering a political tone in the video game culture by "an army of sociopathic feminist programmers and campaigners, abetted by achingly politically correct American tech bloggers".

He alleged writer collusion on the ongoing Gamergate controversy mentioning that journalists were conspiring to put up negative report on the subject. In support of his view he published correspondence of video game journalists from the private mailing list ‘GameJournoPros’.

He faced several adversities for supporting Gamergate including receiving a dead animal and an unknown substance filled syringe. He along with Christina Hoff Sommers organised a meeting of the Gamergate backers in May 2015 which received a bomb threat through Twitter.

He took charge of the new Breitbart Tech section of ‘Breitbart’, a far-right American online news media, in October 2015. His work there chiefly targeted the liberals, strongly criticising them and their political correctness culture.

He started ‘The dangerous Faggot’, a camp speaking tour in late 2015. However, many of his speeches were cancelled in the UK while these met with protests in the US. No Platform policy of the National Union of Students of the United Kingdom later restricted him to speak in some colleges and Universities in the nation in 2017.

His Twitter account was suspended briefly by the online news and social networking service in December 2015 after he altered his profile self-describing himself as “social justice editor" of the American internet media company ‘BuzzFeed’.

He started the Yiannopoulos Privilege Grant with Margaret MacLennan in January 2016, the objective of which is to aid disadvantaged white males with grants of $2,500. McLennan, who served as bursary manager of the grant, alleged mismanagement and criticised it in August 2016 on social media.

He was accredited for the first time for a White House press briefing in March 2016.

He faced brief suspension of his Twitter account again in June 2016 after he censured Islam following the June 12, 2016 terrorist attack on the Orlando gay nightclub ‘Pulse’. Twitter banned his account permanently citing his July 2016 comments surrounding the 2016 film ‘Ghostbusters’ as "inciting or engaging in the targeted abuse or harassment of others".

He stood for the election for rector of the University of Glasgow in 2017. The election was won by Aamer Anwar.

Yiannopoulos has embroiled himself in many controversies for his comments on gay rights, feminism and Islam.

He had to resign from ‘Breitbart’ in February 2017 following a controversy that cropped up from a video clip where he said that sexual relation can be “perfectly consensual” between thirteen year old boys and men and women.

Such view that was alleged to be in support of paedophilia also led him to lose a speaking engagement in the ‘Conservative Political Action Conference’ (CPAC) and a book deal.

On March 31, 2017, the website of Yiannopoulos Privilege Grant reported selection of first ten applicants who would receive the grant while Yiannopoloulos and Janet Bloomfield declared the names of the ten recipients.

He has written a couple of poetry books under the pseudonym Milo Andreas Wagner and is slated to self-publish the book ‘Dangerous’ on July 4, 2017, this time in his real name.

He endorsed presidential candidature of Donald Trump who he refers to as “Daddy”.

Personal Life

He is a gay and is quite open about his sexual orientation. At present he has a black boyfriend.

A Roman Catholic by practice, he mentioned that his Jewish ancestry from his maternal grandmother’s side has brought him in an awkward position with those alt-right elements with neo-Nazism ideology.
