Will Cowboys Draft a QB? 1

The Dallas Cowboys have expressed their desire to add a rookie quarterback this draft cycle. While the team is unlikely to use their top picks for a quarterback, they might consider picking one up later in the draft as the current quarterback room only consists of Cooper Rush and Will Grier as depth. The team’s history suggests that they won’t draft a quarterback unless the right player falls, and they feel confident in their current veteran signal caller.

Mike McCarthy, the head coach, is a former quarterback coach, and it is a position he has leaned on throughout his career to run his West Coast brand of offense. Even when his quarterback room has been full, McCarthy has been willing to invest more draft capital in the position.

The importance of the quarterback position in the modern NFL cannot be overemphasized, and having an extra option behind Prescott and Rush serves both short-term and long-term needs. Jerry Jones, the team owner, has bluntly stated earlier in the offseason that the Cowboys were committed to drafting a QB.

The Importance of QB for Dallas Cowboys

The quarterback position is considered the most critical position in football, with the potential to impact a game like no other position. The Dallas Cowboys are no exception, with their passing offense far outpacing their running offense under Dak Prescott’s leadership. Even with backup QB Cooper Rush and Will Grier under contract, the team has an open chair or two in the quarterback room.

Drafting a QB: Will It Happen?

The Cowboys have expressed their interest in adding a rookie quarterback this draft cycle, but with Cooper Rush returning, will this change their plans? Head coach Mike McCarthy is a former quarterback coach, and it is a position he has leaned on throughout his career to run his West Coast brand of offense. Even when his quarterback room has been full, McCarthy has been willing to invest more draft capital in the position.

From 2012-2022, the Cowboys have drafted only two quarterbacks: Dak Prescott (2016) and Ben DiNucci (2020). From 2006 to 2018, McCarthy’s years as head coach in Green Bay, his team drafted five quarterbacks, and interestingly, six of the seven quarterbacks were drafted in the back half of their respective drafts. Three of the five quarterbacks McCarthy drafted in Green Bay were selected before Aaron Rodgers was the established starter. It is generally hard to find franchise quarterbacks outside of the first round.

Why Draft a QB?

Although the Cowboys have two quarterbacks, they need to prepare for the future as Prescott is only locked in for two more seasons, and the team has given up their ability to franchise tag him again. Prescott has missed five or more games in two of his last three seasons, so having an extra option behind him and Rush serves both short-term and long-term needs.

Jerry Jones, the team owner, bluntly stated earlier in the offseason that the Cowboys were committed to drafting a QB. It remains to be seen if the team will stay true to their intentions, but the history of McCarthy and his team’s draft choices suggest that they are always open to drafting a quarterback regardless of the current situation.

Dallas Cowboys Drafting a QB

While the Dallas Cowboys are unlikely to use their top picks for a quarterback this draft cycle, they might consider picking one up later in the draft. The current quarterback room only consists of Cooper Rush and Will Grier as depth, and it’s possible that both players have already maxed out their potential.

Although there is a diminished sense of urgency with the re-signing of Rush, the Cowboys may still opt for a rookie free agent instead of forcing the issue in the draft. The team’s history suggests that they won’t draft a quarterback unless the right player falls, as neither side has been overly eager to do so when they feel confident in their current veteran signal caller.
