Sunbury United Advances to the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup Grand Final
Sunbury United is set to face Romsey in the Gisborne and District Cricket Association McIntyre Cup grand final after a dominant performance in the semi-final against Bacchus Marsh. Having missed out on the grand final last season, United put together one of its best performances of the season to win through to the final day of the season.
Winning the toss, United decided to bat and produced a brilliant display with the bat to set up the win on day one of the match. Ashan Ranaweera was the standout performer, top-scoring with 134 runs at the top of the order. United made an impressive total of 9-320 from their 80 overs.
Upul Fernando, the United coach, was ecstatic with the team’s performance, praising the efforts of every member of the team. He was particularly pleased with their collective effort to put 300 runs on the board in a semi-final, which he called “massive.”
In the chase, United’s bowling attack was in fine form, with Senura Perera taking four wickets and Rajitha Mendis taking three wickets. Brenton Payne played a lone hand for the Bulls, making 104 runs, but it was not enough to prevent United from securing the win.
United will face Romsey in the grand final, a team that knocked off minor premiers Gisborne in the other semi-final. The grand final will be Romsey’s second straight after losing to Gisborne in the previous season.
Fernando expressed confidence going into the grand final, having played well over the last three weeks. He said they were expecting to face Gisborne but was surprised to see Romsey as their opponents.
United will be looking to win their first McIntyre Cup since 2015 and Fernando is hopeful that his team’s impressive performances will be enough to secure the victory.
