SIUE baseball team split a doubleheader with UIC Flames on Saturday, with SIUE losing the first game 13-3 and winning the second game 9-6 at the USA Baseball Complex in Millington, Tennessee. The series was initially scheduled to be played in Edwardsville but was moved due to cold weather. The split left SIUE with a 12-5 record, while UIC’s record is 7-7.
In the first game, UIC dominated the early innings, with SIUE’s Jake Bockenstedt giving up home runs in the first and second innings, allowing UIC to build a 6-0 lead. Although Brady Bunten’s two-run double helped SIUE get on the scoreboard, UIC continued to dominate, with Charlie Szykowny hitting a double, a home run, and three RBIs to lead the Flames to an 11-run victory. Bockenstedt finished with six runs allowed on six hits over three innings, four strikeouts, and three walks.
SIUE found their footing in the second game, with both teams remaining scoreless in the first five innings. However, SIUE scored three runs in the fifth and sixth innings, with Bunten’s double down the left-field line, plating all three runners to give SIUE a 3-0 lead. SIUE continued to add to their lead, with Brennan Orf’s three-run home run making it 7-1, and they added a pair of runs in the seventh to lead 9-1.
UIC tried to make a comeback in the top of the ninth, scoring five times on two hits and five walks and forcing SIUE to use three pitchers in the inning. Zeus Ponder eventually stopped the Flames, coming on with the bases loaded and picking up the final two outs for his fifth save of the year. Bunten led SIUE with three hits and three RBIs, while Chase Bloomer and Avery Owusu-Asiedu had two hits each. Orf finished with three RBIs.
Teague Conrad started the second game and worked into the seventh inning, allowing a run on six hits while striking out three. According to SIUE head coach Sean Lyons, Conrad’s performance was a huge boost to the team, especially after the big loss in the first game.
The third and final game of the series will take place on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
