The Detroit Lions have made a big move to revamp their secondary by signing free-agent safety Chauncey “C.J.” Gardner-Johnson to a one-year deal worth up to $8 million. The signing comes after the Lions added cornerbacks Cameron Sutton and Emmanuel Moseley in the worst week of free agency.
Gardner-Johnson was tied for the NFL lead in interceptions in 2022, with six interceptions while playing just 12 regular-season games. Despite being placed on injured reserve on Dec. 13 due to a lacerated kidney, he returned to play in the Eagles’ three postseason games, including the Super Bowl.
Gardner-Johnson, 25, previously played three seasons with the New Orleans Saints before joining the Eagles in 2022 and being a key part of the NFC champion squad. Gardner-Johnson is a versatile defensive back who can play safety and the nickel/slot corner.
The Lions are having an active offseason and have also added running back David Montgomery and guard Graham Glasnow. With the No. 6, 18, 48, and 55 picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, Detroit is shaping up to be a formidable team.
