Lee was chasing his fourth national title but was pinned by Ramos in the final seconds of their match. Ramos, the fourth seed at 125 pounds, ended Lee’s 58-match winning streak with the fall. Ramos had been confident that he could beat Lee and had vocalized his belief in himself. Ramos will now face Princeton’s Pat Glory, the undefeated number two seed, in the championship match. Ramos stated that he sees it as a dream and the job is not done yet.
Cornell’s Yianni Diakomihalis is still in contention for his fourth title on Saturday after defeating Penn State’s Shayne Van Ness in the semifinals. Diakomihalis is one of only five wrestlers to win four Division I national championships, and he understands the pressure that Lee faced before his loss to Ramos. Penn State’s wrestlers, Roman Bravo-Young at 133, Carter Starocci at 174, and Aaron Brooks at 184, are all seeking their third national titles. Bravo-Young defeated Arizona State’s Michael McGee with a two-point takedown in sudden victory time, and now has the nation’s longest win streak at 56 matches.
