Penn State wrestlers dominated in the NCAA Division I wrestling tournament, with four wrestlers advancing to the finals. Roman Bravo-Young, Carter Starocci, Aaron Brooks, and freshman Levi Haines all won their semifinals matches. Purdue’s Ramos Stuns Iowa’s Lee; Penn State Leads the Race
Purdue’s wrestler, Matt Ramos, made history with one of the most astonishing upsets in the NCAA Division I wrestling tournament by ending Iowa’s Spencer Lee’s chase for four national titles. In their semifinal match on Friday night, Ramos, the No. 4 seed at 125 pounds, pinned Lee with just one second remaining in the third period, ending Lee’s 58-match winning streak.
Ramos was vocal about his belief that he could beat Lee and spoke about his confidence in his hard work and the power of positive thinking. This win leaves only Cornell’s Yianni Diakomihalis, in contention for a fourth title on Saturday. He defeated Penn State’s Shayne Van Ness 8-3 in his semifinal match at 149. If Diakomihalis defeats Ohio State’s Sammy Sasso in the final, he will become the fifth wrestler to win four Division I national championships.
Penn State is on the verge of winning their 10th national title in 12 years, leading with 116.5 points. Iowa is currently in second place with 77.5 points, followed by Cornell (64) and Ohio State (62).
In the other semifinal, Princeton’s Pat Glory defeated Nebraska’s Liam Cronin 8-2 and will face Ramos for the championship on Saturday. The No. 2 seed, Glory, is undefeated.
While Lee’s loss was undoubtedly a shock, he is not the only wrestler to have faced significant pressure at the tournament. Diakomihalis also faced pressure when he heard the news of Lee’s defeat, as he is also in a similar position. Despite this, he acknowledged the pressure Lee must have felt, and he emphasized the challenges of being a dominant wrestler in front of a waiting audience.
Penn State also had three wrestlers, Roman Bravo-Young, Carter Starocci, and Aaron Brooks, seeking their third national titles. All three advanced to the finals, with Bravo-Young taking the nation’s longest win streak at 56 matches.
