MIT Sophomore wins NCAA Elite 90

MIT sophomore Roderick Huang has won the Elite 90 Award for the NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship. This award is given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average who competes in the championship competition. Huang is a math and computer science major with a 5.0 GPA and is the first member of the Engineers’ men’s swimming and diving team to win the prestigious award. He placed 19th in the 200 breast, 20th in the 400, and 26th in the 200 IM at the 2023 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships. MIT has won the Elite 90 Award 21 times, ranking the Engineers second all-time across all divisions behind only Stanford, who leads with 28.

MIT’s Roderick Huang, a sophomore majoring in mathematics and computer science, has won the NCAA’s Elite 90 Award for the Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship. The award is given to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average, who competes at the respective NCAA Championships in the sport. To be eligible, athletes must have been a member of their team for at least two years and be an active participant at the championship competition.

Huang, with a 5.0 GPA, is the first member of the MIT men’s swimming and diving team to win the Elite 90 Award and the second MIT swimmer ever to have earned the honor. Huang placed 19th in the 200 breast, 20th in the 400, and 26th in the 200 IM at the 2023 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships. Huang is also a CSCAA First Team Scholar All-American and was named to the NEWMAC Academic All-Conference team this season.

Huang won both the 200-breast and 400 IM at the NEWMAC Championships and finished second in the 200 IM. As a freshman, Huang finished fifth in the A final of the 400 IM, eighth in the 200 breast, and 17th in the 200 IM. MIT tied for fifth place in the men’s meet at the 2023 NCAA DIII Championships, scoring 214.5 points.
