NFL Free Agency and Trade Updates: Laremy Tunsil Signs $75 Million Extension

On Sunday, the Houston Texans agreed to a deal with Laremy Tunsil, securing the NFL’s highest-paid offensive tackle with a massive three-year extension worth $75 million, including $60 million fully guaranteed. The extension surpasses San Francisco 49ers’ Trent Williams’ average annual salary, now making Tunsil the highest-paid offensive tackle with a salary of $25 million. The move strengthens Houston’s offensive line as they plan to select a quarterback with the second overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

The Dallas Cowboys have also made a significant move on Sunday, acquiring wide receiver Brandin Cooks from the Texans for a fifth-round pick in 2023 and a sixth-round pick in 2024. Dallas will pay $12 million of Cooks’ salary this season, while Houston will pay the remaining $6 million. The acquisition gives the Cowboys a legitimate deep threat and a complement to CeeDee Lamb.

New England Patriots’ tight end Mike Gesicki has signed a team-friendly one-year deal worth $4.5 million in base value, including $3.55 million fully guaranteed. Gesicki’s incentives can double his salary, allowing him to earn up to $9 million in 2023.

The Buffalo Bills have released wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie, who played in 15 games last season, starting eight, with 42 receptions for 423 yards, four receiving touchdowns, and one rushing touchdown. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have also released Cameron Brate and Leonard Fournette.

Jalen Mills, the versatile defensive back of the New England Patriots, is being released, reportedly saving about $5 million against the cap. Meanwhile, the Detroit Lions have retained their kicker, and the Las Vegas Raiders have signed safety Tyree Epps.

In other news, Cincinnati Bengals LT Jonah Williams has requested a trade after the team acquired Orlando Brown Jr. from the Kansas City Chiefs. With 47 starts at left tackle and only 25 years old, there should be plenty of interest in him.

Lastly, the Dallas Cowboys are bringing back Cooper Rush, the backup quarterback of Dak Prescott, on a two-year deal worth $6 million max, with the first year and signing bonus fully guaranteed, according to NFL Media.

In other NFL news, the Philadelphia Eagles have signed Marcus Mariota to a one-year deal worth $5 million, which could potentially reach up to $8 million. Mariota, the former No. 2 overall pick, will back up Jalen Hurts and provide a mobile option at quarterback for the Eagles.

The Las Vegas Raiders have also re-signed Jermaine Eluemunor, who started all 17 games last season and won the right tackle job. Meanwhile, the New England Patriots have traded Jonnu Smith and added Mike Gesicki to play alongside Hunter Henry.

Lastly, the Chicago Bears have signed former Green Bay Packers tight end Robert Tonyan to a one-year deal.
