The Detroit Lions have continued their rebuilding efforts in the secondary by signing safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and bringing in corners Cameron Sutton and Emmanuel Moseley. The Lions have added three new starters and could use a pair of first-round picks on defense to address their issues in the secondary. Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers will have to deal with the Lions’ reloaded secondary in 2023 as they have traded away Kerby Joseph, who gave Aaron Rodgers a hard time last season. Jordan Love will face the Lions’ improved defense, which struggled mightily in 2022, allowing an average of 245.8 passing yards per game and 26 passing touchdowns. Gardner-Johnson, who tied the NFL lead with six interceptions last season, will join a group of safeties that includes Tracy Walker and promising rookie Kerby Joseph. It remains to be seen if the Lions’ new additions will continue to stifle Rodgers and other top quarterbacks in the league in the upcoming season.
Jordan Love and Green Bay Packers to Face Rebuilt Detroit Lions Secondary in 2023
The Detroit Lions have continued their rebuilding efforts in the secondary by signing safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson to a one-year deal. Gardner-Johnson had a career year in 2022, tying the NFL lead with six interceptions during his lone season with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Lions hope he will bring the same type of playmaking to a secondary that struggled mightily last season.
The Lions’ pass defense allowed an average of 245.8 passing yards per game in 2022, which was the third-most in NFL, and they gave up 26 passing touchdowns (tied-eighth). Gardner-Johnson will join a group of safeties that includes Tracy Walker and promising rookie Kerby Joseph, who logged four interceptions last season.
Before signing Gardner-Johnson, the Lions also brought in corners Cameron Sutton and Emmanuel Moseley to address their issues in the secondary. Sutton started 31 games over the last two years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, totaling five interceptions and 21 pass defenses, while Moseley was on his way to a breakout season with the San Francisco 49ers in 2022 before suffering a season-ending ACL injury.
The Lions have now added three new starters and could use a pair of first-round picks on a defense that largely prevented them from reaching their full potential last season. Despite having their first winning season since 2017, the Lions narrowly missed out on the playoffs.
In 2023, Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers will face the rebuilt Lions secondary. The Lions ended up with a 9-8 record last season, and their strong finish was jump-started by a Week 6 win over the Packers in which the defense picked off Aaron Rodgers three times. The Lions eventually completed the regular season sweep over Green Bay in Week 18 with the postseason on the line, intercepting Rodgers during the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Although the Lions struggled against most of their other opponents, their secondary gave Rodgers a hard time, especially Kerby Joseph, who picked him off three times in two games. It remains to be seen if the new additions to the Lions’ secondary will continue to stifle Rodgers and other top quarterbacks in the league in the upcoming season.
Jordan Love to Face Lions’ Reloaded Secondary in 2023
Kerby Joseph, who gave Aaron Rodgers a hard time last season, has been traded to the New York Jets. This leaves Jordan Love to deal with the Detroit Lions’ reloaded secondary in 2023. The Lions have added three new starters, including safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, and could use a pair of first-round picks on defense.
