The Dallas Cowboys have signed former Kansas City Chiefs running back Ronald Jones to replace Ezekiel Elliott. The Chiefs only have two running backs on their roster, and the team is among the interested parties in pursuing a trade deal for DeAndre Hopkins, who would be a good fit as a wide receiver. The team could also explore other options, such as free agent Odell Beckham Jr. or a trade deal for a player like Kadarius Toney. The Kansas City Chiefs need to bolster their wide receiver corps to provide support for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, as the team currently has an unproven group of youngsters and journeymen.
The Dallas Cowboys have signed former Kansas City Chiefs running back Ronald Jones, replacing Ezekiel Elliott, who was let go earlier this year. Jones will serve as the backup to Tony Pollard, who solidified his role as the Cowboys’ starting running back in 2022. According to ESPN reporter Todd Archer, Jones had visited The Star on Monday, where the team’s headquarters are located, and agreed to a deal with the Cowboys. Jones played only six games with the Chiefs last year, after spending the previous four years with Tampa Bay, where he had his best year in 2020 with 192 carries, 978 yards, and seven touchdowns.
Jones was a big-name addition to the Chiefs last spring, but he struggled to impress the coaching staff during training camp, falling behind rookie Isiah Pacheco. Jones was almost traded ahead of the final preseason roster cutdown, but he made the roster after an injury to Derrick Gore and a solid performance during the third preseason outing. However, Jones had a disappointing season, only getting 17 carries the entire year. Despite his lack of playing time, he still managed to win his second Super Bowl ring.
With Jones and fullback Michael Burton gone, Jerick McKinnon remains the only unrestricted free agent at RB for the Chiefs. The Chiefs have a strong relationship with McKinnon, so they may try to re-sign him in free agency.
The Kansas City Chiefs have only two running backs on their roster, Clyde Edwards-Helaire and La’Mical Perine, aside from rookie Isiah Pacheco. However, wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins was a hot topic in the Chiefs community on March 21, with rumors swirling that he might be traded to KC. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport suggested that a Hopkins deal was imminent, with talks ramping up among interested teams, including the Chiefs, New York Giants, Tennessee Titans, Atlanta Falcons, and New England Patriots.
If the Chiefs miss out on Hopkins, they could pursue free agent Odell Beckham Jr. or explore the trade market for a player like Kadarius Toney. Regardless of who they pursue, general manager Brett Veach is in need of another weapon for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs’ wide receiver room currently consists of Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Toney, Skyy Moore, and an unproven group of youngsters and journeymen.
Jerrion Ealy, a wide receiver hybrid, also played the running back position in college. However, the Chiefs need to bolster their running back corps to provide support for their quarterbacks.
The Kansas City Chiefs have Travis Kelce, Noah Gray, and Jody Fortson at tight end, but they could use another starting caliber wide receiver in 2023. DeAndre Hopkins is considered a good fit for the team, and they are among the interested parties in pursuing a trade deal for him.
