The Eagles will have their youngest pair of full-time starting guards since 2006 with Landon Dickerson and Cam Jurgens, who will be 25 and 24, respectively, by the start of the season. Isaac Seumalo, who started 60 games for the Eagles and played in both the 2017 and 2022 Super Bowls, signed a three-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Eagles have lost six starters from the 2022 NFC Champions, including Javon Hargrave, T.J. Edwards, Marcus Epps, Kyzir White, Miles Sanders, and Seumalo, as well as backups Gardner Minshew and Andre Dillard. The team has signed Jason Kelce, Fletcher Cox, and Brandon Graham to one-year contracts, as well as James Bradberry, Boston Scott, Rashaad Penny, Greedy Williams, and Marcus Mariota.
Driscoll and Opeta are experienced backups for the Eagles. Driscoll has started 16 games, and Opeta has started five. Seumalo rejoins guard Nate Herbig in Pittsburgh, his teammate with the Eagles from 2019 through 2021.
Isaac Seumalo, the former starting right guard for the Eagles, has found a new home with the Pittsburgh Steelers, signing a three-year contract with them. According to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz, Seumalo was never involved in talks with the Eagles, and the team did not try to keep him.
Seumalo started 60 games for the Eagles and is one of only seven players to have played in both the 2017 and 2022 Super Bowls. He played at a high level and was ranked 10th of 79 guards who played at least 300 snaps this past year with a 72.7 grade, according to Pro Football Focus.
However, injuries derailed his 2020 and 2021 seasons, when he was limited to a total of just 12 games. With the Eagles’ 2022 second-round pick Cam Jurgens waiting in the wings to take over at either center or right guard, and Seumalo’s anticipated large contract, the Eagles’ cap issues made it impossible for him to return for an eighth year with the team.
The details of Seumalo’s contract with the Steelers were not immediately available. Spotrac projected Seumalo at $12 million per year, but the deal is likely to be worth less than that, given the sluggish market for guards during this year’s free agency.
Former Raven Ben Powers signed a four-year deal worth about $12.9 million per year with the Broncos, but he is the only guard who has signed for over $10 million per year so far. Moreover, Powers is three years younger than Seumalo, who is 29.
Seumalo was the Eagles’ third-round pick in 2016 and began the 2017 Super Bowl season as the starting left guard. He lost his job to Stefen Wisniewski four games into the season and remained a backup for the rest of the year. However, he regained the job midway through the 2018 season and remained there through 2021.
Seumalo’s 60 starts at guard are the eighth-most in Eagles history, behind Ron Baker, Todd Herremans, Jim Skaggs, Wade Key, Jermane Mayberry, Mark Nordquist, Brandon Brooks, and Steve Kenney.
