Isaac Seumalo, former starting right guard for the Philadelphia Eagles, has signed a three-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. With Seumalo’s departure, the Eagles will have their youngest pair of full-time starting guards since 2006. The team has experienced backups in Jack Driscoll and Sua Opeta. The Steelers will be hoping that Seumalo can continue to play at a high level and help them in the upcoming season. In addition to Seumalo, the Eagles have lost six starters from the 2022 NFC Champions, including backups Gardner Minshew and Andre Dillard. They have signed several players, including Jason Kelce, Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham, James Bradberry, Boston Scott, Rashaad Penny, Greedy Williams, and Marcus Mariota.
Isaac Seumalo, former starting right guard for the Philadelphia Eagles, has signed a three-year contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz. Seumalo is one of only a few players remaining from the 2016 Eagles and played in both the 2017 and 2022 Super Bowls. Despite being a talented player, injuries prevented him from playing in 2020 and 2021, limiting him to just 12 games. However, he started all 20 games in the 2022 season and played very well.
Seumalo’s departure from the Eagles was not surprising, given the team’s cap issues and the presence of Cam Jurgens, their 2022 second-round pick, who is waiting in the wings to take over at center or right guard. Furthermore, Seumalo’s anticipated large contract meant that the Eagles were never involved in talks with him. The terms of Seumalo’s contract with the Steelers are unknown, but according to Spotrac, he was projected to earn $12 million per year. However, given that the guard market has been relatively quiet so far, it’s likely that the deal is worth less than that.
Although Seumalo is 29 years old, he is a very good player. Pro Football Focus ranked him 10th out of 79 guards who played at least 300 snaps in the past year, with a grade of 72.7. Seumalo was originally the Eagles’ third-round pick in 2016, and he started the 2017 Super Bowl season as the starting left guard. However, he lost his job to Stefen Wisniewski four games into the season and spent the rest of the year as a backup. He regained the job midway through the 2018 season and remained there through 2021.
Seumalo’s departure from the Eagles means that his 60 starts at guard are now the eighth-most in Eagles history, behind Ron Baker (106), Todd Herremans (96), Jim Skaggs (77), Wade Key (74), Jermane Mayberry (74), Mark Nordquist (65), Brandon Brooks (64), and Steve Kenney (63). The Steelers will be hoping that Seumalo can continue to play at a high level and help them in the upcoming season.
The Philadelphia Eagles will have their youngest pair of full-time starting guards since 2006, with Landon Dickerson and Cam Jurgens, aged 25 and 24, respectively. With Isaac Seumalo’s departure for Pittsburgh, only seven players remain on the roster from the 2017 Super Bowl season.
In addition to Dickerson and Jurgens, the Eagles have experienced backups in Jack Driscoll and Sua Opeta. In Pittsburgh, Seumalo rejoins guard Nate Herbig, his former Eagles teammate. Both became Eagles during the tenure of current Steelers assistant general manager Andy Weidl.
The Eagles have lost six starters from the 2022 NFC Champions, including Seumalo, as well as backups Gardner Minshew and Andre Dillard. They have signed several players, including Jason Kelce, Fletcher Cox, Brandon Graham, James Bradberry, Boston Scott, Rashaad Penny, Greedy Williams, and Marcus Mariota.
