Houston’s impressive second-half performance was characterized by a desperate energy, as the team played with the motivation of a national championship contender. The team refused to become the third top seed to be knocked out of March Madness before the third round, following in the footsteps of Purdue and Kansas. Tramon Mark led the Cougars with 26 points, while Sasser finished with 22 points, despite being hindered by foul trouble. Shead and Sasser were both forced to the bench with four fouls apiece, but Mark stepped up, keeping the Cougars rolling offensively. The game against Auburn was held at the Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama, only about a two-hour drive from Auburn’s campus, giving the Tigers a home-state advantage. However, the Cougars proved to be the stronger team, scoring the final nine points of the game to secure a comfortable win.
