The Detroit Lions have made another significant addition to their defense by signing free-agent safety Chauncey “C.J.” Gardner-Johnson to a one-year deal worth up to $8 million. ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed the news on Sunday night.

The Lions have been working to improve their secondary this offseason, and the addition of Gardner-Johnson is a massive boost. He was tied for the NFL lead in interceptions in 2022 with six, despite only playing 12 regular-season games. Gardner-Johnson suffered a lacerated kidney and was placed on injured reserve on Dec. 13, but he still managed to play in the Eagles’ three postseason games, including the Super Bowl.

Gardner-Johnson was a key part of the NFC champion squad after joining the Eagles in 2022. His versatility as a defensive back makes him a valuable addition to the Lions, as he can play safety and the nickel/slot corner.

The Lions have been active in the free agency, having already signed cornerbacks Cameron Sutton and Emmanuel Moseley, and adding Gardner-Johnson is another significant move. Additionally, Detroit has also signed running back David Montgomery and guard Graham Glasnow, indicating a willingness to build a strong team for the 2023 season.

With the No. 6, 18, 48, and 55 picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, the Lions are poised to continue strengthening their team. They won nine games in 2022 and are considered the clear favorites to win the NFC North in the upcoming season.

Overall, the Lions have made significant strides to improve their defense and create a competitive team for the upcoming season. Gardner-Johnson’s addition should help bolster their secondary and make them a more well-rounded team.
