The Dallas Cowboys have acquired wide receiver Brandin Cooks from the Houston Texans for a fifth-round pick in 2023 and a sixth-round pick in 2024. Cooks is expected to provide speed and complement Pro Bowler CeeDee Lamb. This is the second major trade for the Cowboys in the past week, as they also acquired cornerback Stephon Gilmore from the Indianapolis Colts. The team traditionally builds through the draft but has now dealt two of their fifth-round picks. Cooks’ contract was restructured so that Houston will pay $6 million of his salary this season while Dallas will pay the remaining $12 million. Cooks is under contract through 2024 and has caught 630 passes for 8,616 yards and 49 touchdowns in his career with the Texans, Los Angeles Rams, New England Patriots, and New Orleans Saints.
The Dallas Cowboys have acquired Houston Texans wide receiver Brandin Cooks in exchange for a fifth-round pick in 2023 and a sixth-round pick in 2024. The trade comes as the Cowboys look to add speed and a complement to Pro Bowler CeeDee Lamb. Cooks’ salary of $18 million in 2023 is guaranteed, and he is under contract through 2024. The Cowboys and Texans had previously discussed a deal before the last trade deadline but could not reach an agreement.
Last year, the Cowboys traded Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns for a fifth-round pick but failed to replace him effectively. With Michael Gallup returning from injury, the Cowboys believe Cooks will be a good addition to pair with Lamb and Gallup, who they expect will be much improved in his second year off of major surgery.
Cooks, who caught 57 passes for 699 yards and three touchdowns in 13 games for the Texans last season, has been vocal about his unhappiness in Houston and his unwillingness to be part of a rebuild. He has caught 630 passes for 8,616 yards and 49 touchdowns in his career with the Texans, Los Angeles Rams, New England Patriots, and New Orleans Saints. This is the fourth time he has been traded in his career.
Cooks’ contract was restructured on Saturday so that Houston will pay $6 million of his salary this season, while Dallas will pay the remaining $12 million. In a text message to ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime, Cooks expressed his excitement for the opportunity to play for the Cowboys, saying he was “beyond blessed” and couldn’t wait to “be special for the star.”
The Dallas Cowboys have recently made two major trades, including acquiring cornerback Stephon Gilmore from the Indianapolis Colts for a fifth-round pick (No. 176 overall). The team traditionally focuses on building through the draft, but they now have just one pick in each round after trading two of their fifth-round picks.
