Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban Suspends Freshman Defensive Back Tony Mitchell
Alabama Head Coach Nick Saban announced during a Monday press conference that freshman defensive back Tony Mitchell has been suspended from all team activities until the university receives more information about his recent arrest. Mitchell was arrested on Thursday morning in Florida on charges of marijuana possession with the intent to sell.
According to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, Mitchell and Christophre Lewis, of Valley Grande, Alabama, were apprehended with a significant amount of marijuana, a set of scales, a loaded handgun between the passenger seat and center console, and a large amount of cash. Lewis, who was with Mitchell during the arrest, was charged with possession of marijuana with the intent to sell or deliver and carrying a concealed firearm without a permit.
Mitchell, a former four-star safety, was a standout player at Thompson High School, where he helped his team win four consecutive state titles. During the last season, Mitchell registered 56 total tackles and eight tackles for loss, contributing to a defense that allowed an average of only 12 points per game.
Coach Saban emphasized the importance of responsibility and decision-making when discussing Mitchell’s suspension. He pointed out that individuals must be responsible for the company they keep, the situations they find themselves in, and the choices they make. Saban remarked, “There’s no such thing in being at the wrong place at the wrong time. You’ve got to be responsible for who you’re with, who you’re around, what you do, who you associated yourself with and the situation that you put yourself in.”
As the situation continues to unfold, Alabama fans and sports enthusiasts around the country will be watching to see how the university and its athletic department respond. For now, Mitchell will be sitting out all team activities until further notice.
