Hugh Grant, who stars as Forge Fitzwilliam the Rogue in the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons movie, “Honor Among Thieves,” shared his thoughts on the Dragonborn race in a promotional interview with Fandango. The Dragonborn is one of the iconic races in the tabletop RPG, Dungeons & Dragons.
During the interview, Grant revealed his annoyance with the Dragonborn because they continually upstaged him, drawing attention away from his performance. He even stated that he would have cut all the Dragonborn from the film.
“I remember doing a close-up and thinking, ‘I am rather good in this shot.’ And then I went to look at the monitor, to see how marvelous I’d been, and in the background, one of these bloody dragon things walks through the background of the shot,” Grant said. “And you think, ‘What’s that?’ And obviously, no one’s listening or looking at me. They’re… I’m upstaged by this creature. So I would have cut all those out.”
The Dragonborn race first appeared in “Dungeons & Dragons 3.5” (2003) and has become one of the primary races that players can choose during character creation in “Dungeons & Dragons 4e” and “Dungeons & Dragons 5e.” Selecting this race provides stat increases for Strength and Charisma, as well as a Breath Weapon dependent on the type of dragon. Red and Gold Dragonborn, for example, breathe fire, while Bronze and Blue Dragonborn breathe lightning.
Michelle Rodriguez, who also stars in the upcoming movie, praised the Dragonborn, calling them “awesome.” However, Grant’s feelings towards them are quite the opposite.
In addition to Grant’s grudge against the Dragonborn, the “Honor Among Thieves” cast also revealed other interesting information in the buildup to the film’s debut in March. Chris Pine, who portrays Edgin the Bard, confirmed that bards are his favorite Dungeons & Dragons class during a Q&A at the SXSW Film Festival. “I love being a bard so much,” he explained. “No preparation. Lots of smiling.”
