Ingredients:

For the Cake:

  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking 1 soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 ½ cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Prep the Oven and Pans: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract.
  4. Combine Wet and Dry: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Slowly stir in the boiling water.
  5. Bake the Cakes: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool the Cakes: Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. Make the Frosting: In a large bowl, cream together the butter, powdered sugar, cocoa powder, milk, and vanilla extract until light and fluffy.
  8. Frost the Cake: Once the cakes are cool, frost the top of one layer with the buttercream frosting. Place the second layer on top and frost the entire cake.

Tips:

  • For a richer flavor: Use high-quality cocoa powder and unsalted butter.
  • To prevent the cake from drying out: Don’t overbake. Check for doneness with a toothpick.
  • For a more intense chocolate flavor: Add a teaspoon of instant coffee powder to the batter.
  • To make the frosting smoother: Beat the frosting for an extra minute or two.

Enjoy this classic chocolate cake!
