Annie Proulx’s “Brokeback Mountain” is set to make its stage debut as a play with music, starring Mike Faist and Lucas Hedges. The limited-season production will be held at the new London theatre, @sohoplace, between May and August 2023. Ashley Robinson’s script will feature original music from The Feeling’s lead singer, Dan Gillespie Sells. The inclusion of music aims to give voice to the tumultuous inner landscape of the characters, and provide the scope of the vast and brutal outer landscape. Faist and Hedges will play the roles of Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar, respectively. The original short story was published in The New Yorker in 1997, and was adapted into an award-winning film in 2005, directed by Ang Lee and starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. Proulx expressed her excitement for the new adaptation, stating that Robinson’s script is “fresh and deeply moving, opening sight lines not visible in the original nor successive treatments”. Fans of the original story and film should not miss this highly-anticipated stage adaptation.
West End Musical Adaptation of Brokeback Mountain to Star Mike Faist and Lucas Hedges
Annie Proulx’s iconic short story, Brokeback Mountain, is set to make its debut on the stage as a play with music. The production will star Mike Faist as Jack Twist and Lucas Hedges as Ennis Del Mar, and will run for a limited season at the new London theatre, @sohoplace, from May to August 2023.
Ashley Robinson wrote the script for the play, which will also feature original music from The Feeling’s lead singer, Dan Gillespie Sells. Robinson has described the inclusion of music as a way to “give voice to the tumultuous inner landscape of our wannabe cowboys (both young men of few words), and provide the scope of our vast and brutal outer landscape, not to mention allowing Proulx’s poetic prose to literally sing”.
Mike Faist, who has previously received Tony and Bafta nominations for his work on Broadway and in films, will take on the role of Jack Twist. Lucas Hedges, who has also received critical acclaim for his performances in the films, including Manchester By The Sea and Boy Erased, will play Ennis Del Mar.
The original short story was published in The New Yorker in 1997 and has since reached millions of readers. It was adapted into an award-winning film in 2005, directed by Ang Lee and starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Proulx has expressed her excitement for the new adaptation, stating that Robinson’s script is “fresh and deeply moving, opening sight lines not visible in the original nor successive treatments”.
